St. John’s, Antigua – The Bennaboys opened their first of 3 friendlies scheduled for the month of March with a win, as they defeated the United States Virgin Islands by 2 – 0 score line.
In what could be called a professional result for the host, saw a youthful Antigua and Barbuda team display moments of great promise versus a compact and organized USVI team.
The action started in the first half as the new look lineup saw veteran Tomarley Thomas with the captains armband . The first chance for the host came from ABFA Premier League top goal scorer Rakeem Henry who made a late run into the box after good work on the right side from Eugene Kirwan, but Henry’s shot would unfortunately go wide of the mark.
USVI would show great organization and were very compact. This strategy saw Antigua take a more patient approach towards the match where possession was key.
The goal would come in the 24th minute as a great midfield build up saw Javorn “Bozzo” Stevens latch on to deep pass from his midfield and calmly slot home the first goal of the match. Javorn would have a great celebration as the 16 year old would score on his full international debut for Antigua.
In the Second half the USVI came out more positive and tried to apply some pressure to Antigua, but stand in skipper Tomarley “Ziggy” Thomas hit home a 25 yard shot to make it 2 – 0.
There would be many changes from both sides in the second half as both coaches took the opportunity to look at their respective players. After the final whistle blew the final score line would be Antigua and Barbuda 2 – 0 United States virgin Islands.
