At a brief ceremony last weekend, The Empire FC was the recipient of football equipment which was donated to the Club by Head Soccer Coach Dan Birkey and his Men’s Soccer Team of the Concordia University, Portland, Oregon, USA.
A total of thirteen (13) Footballs, some training vests and discs were handed over to Mr. Michael Scotland, the head of the Club’s Technical Committee and former Coach/player, by Lennie Quashie, a graduate and Student Athlete (Soccer) Hall of Fame Inductee of Concordia University.

Mr. Scotland was very thankful to Coach Dan Birkey and the Concordia University Men’s Soccer Team for their assistance to the Club and said that although the equipment was intended for the senior men’s team, they will now be utilized by the U13 & U17 teams. He said that the Club’s sponsor, Cool & Smooth, has provided the senior team with some equipment as part of its 2012-13 sponsorship agreement.

Quashie, who is also the Club’s General Secretary, said the equipment was requested at short notice after the Club was short on footballs at the start of training. Coach Birkey responded favourably to our request and he included some training vests and dics. Quashie went on to say that the donation is the first step in what he hopes is a fruitful and longstanding relationship between Concordia University Men’s Soccer and the Empire Football Club.

Head Coach Dan Birkey who is in his 25th year with the Cavaliers said his hope is that “the equipment will be used as tools to further the growth and development of character and discipline through football in the lives of young people and future leaders on the island of Antigua. All the best to Leno (Lennie Quashie) and the Empire FC.”
