With the imobile Premier Division on break on Saturday following the end of the first round, the first division took centre stage with three matches at the ARG.
In the nightcap Virgin Holidays Fort Road beat Rangers 3-1 to keep its promotion aspiration alive.
It’s second half of the first division and with one game in, Fort Road trail league leaders Celtics on 28 points from 12 games by five points.
The win on Saturday was crucial for Fort Road for at least two reasons.
Firstly, they need to keep Celtics in their sights as well as to keep the Villa Lions at bay.
The Lions also have promotion ambition.
They won on Saturday, 2-1 over Five Islands and are three points behind Fort Road.
Villa, a one-time premier division ‘Lion’ may be the most experienced team in the first division and Fort Road will have to play consistent ball to keep the Lions from overtaking them.
To show its grit, the Lions, despite being down a goal early in Saturday’s game came back to win against Five Islands.
Alex Phillip gave Five Islands the lead three minutes into the game before Michael Roberts equalized seven minutes later.
Twelve minutes after intermission Mervyn Hazelwood scored the game winner for the Lions to give them the very crucial three points.
Two teams facing relegation, Lion Hill and Guydadli also hooked up in a bottom of the table clash.
Guydadli prevailed to win 2-1.
Lion Smart put Guydadli ahead in the 15 th minute before Kevin Stewart increased the lead in the 73rd.
Renford Harris had a consolation goal for Lion Hill five minutes from time.
The win moved Guydadli ahead of Urlings to battle with Lion Hill in the cellar.
