ST. JOHN’S, Antigua  – The Antigua and Barbuda Football Association (ABFA) Premier League will open this weekend, Saturday, September 26, as originally planned, after a Ministry of Sports planned concert slated for the Antigua Recreation Grounds (ARG) was postponed.

E verton Batow“We got confirmation from the Ministry of Sports at 2:40 this afternoon that we had the all-clear to use the grounds following the previous dictate that the ARG would have been unavailable to us to facilitate a concert,” President of the ABFA Everton Gonsalves said.
Officers attached to the ABFA immediately began contacting the clubs to inform them of the latest development and to gauge their preparedness having been told, just last Friday, of the delay.

“The clubs, and, indeed, football lovers, were vocal in their displeasure of the announced delay, so they were receptive to the news, even if it means that they would have quickly switch gears. At the end of the day, all of the teams are eager to begin the 2015-2016 season, and the ABFA is also keen to get the competition started,” Gonsalves added.

Saturday’s opening matches will see Five Islands come up against Ottos Rangers ahead of a Pigott’s Bullets vs. Empire match. On Sunday, Grenades play Fort Road, Old Road face Greenbay Hoppers and Parham and Sap will clash.
