ST JOHN’S, Antigua (February 12, 2016) – Two weeks is definitely too soon to call a season, but the venerable Villa Lions FC has begun a successful defence of last year’s clean sweep of the Gomez/Netherland Insurance Youth Football League with victories in all divisions at the weekend. This follows a successful launch in week one where they only dropped one match.

The youngest Lions defeated Generation Next FC-A 3-1 in the U-7 division; the U-9 squad trounced Pares FC 5-1; the U-11s edged New Generation 4-3; the U-13 team shut out Swetes FC 4-0 and Empire FC 5-0; and the U-16 defeated Willikies FC 2-0.

Villa Lions Head Coach Sowerby Gomes said his club is confident they can retain the Prime Minister’s trophies in all categories.

“That’s the intention, to take it again this year,” Gomes said, noting that he has a large, enthusiastic and highly competitive contingent.

“My teams are eager to play. They look forward to every Saturday, and we see the enthusiasm when they go out there. The organization this year has been taken to another level. I like the surface the youth are playing on over on the cricket pitch, and the teams are more competitive this year, so we are really enjoying it,” Gomes added.

And as for the sole loss last week when Sap U-9 defeated them, Gomes said his team is eager for the rematch.

“It happens sometimes,” he said of the loss, adding that his U-7s were playing concurrently and perhaps the division of leadership on the sidelines resulted in the deficit. “But I can tell you, we are looking forward to playing Sap again,” Gomes said.

The weekend was also a good one for Sap FC, which went unbeaten in the two divisions the club is contesting – U-13 and U-9. The U-9s were 5-0 winners over Willikies while the U-13s defeated Soccer Academy 2-0.

Fifty teams are in the hunt for top honours and bragging rights in year two of the league which also has as sponsors Antigua Masonry Products, Caribbean Premier Motors, Guardian Insurance, Hadeed Motors, Milo and Blue Waters (agents AS Bryden and Sons), and Sharon’s Healthy Foods.

Matches are played every Saturday at the American University of Antigua (AUA), starting at 9 am.
